"Sources relating to Domenico Scarlatti and his almost 600 keyboard sonatas are rare. Exceptional in their scope and in their language, these pieces have given rise to different interpretations over the years, as is evidenced by the various editions in existence. These include Hans von Bülow’s 1864 edition of 18 of the sonatas, presented in a Romantic – nineteenth-century – light that is interesting in many ways.
On this double album the pianist Giulio Biddau compares that version with a recent critical edition. Each sonata is played twice, thus alternating the perspectives and shedding light on two different approaches to Scarlatti’s work."

"Les presque 600 sonates pour clavier de Domenico Scarlatti ont longtemps été basées sur des sources incertaines. Ce corpus exceptionnel par son envergure comme par son langage, a donné lieu à des lectures différentes selon les époques, dont les différentes éditions témoignent. C’est dans celle-ci que s’inscrit, en 1864, l’anthologie des 18 sonates de Scarlatti par Hans von Bülow, qui les y présente sous un prisme romantique intéressant à bien des égards.
Le pianiste Giulio Biddau propose une mise en regard de ce travail avec une édition critique récente, dans un double disque confrontant les deux approches. Les sonates sont ainsi jouées deux fois, alternant les perspectives et projetant Scarlatti dans le kaléidoscope de l’histoire."
